VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: Boothby Graffoe and Somerton Castle by J. G. Ruddock Summary: This book is a local history account of the Lincolnshire village of Boothby Graffoe and the nearby medieval Somerton Castle. The book combines historical records, archaeology, and local traditions to explain how the area developed over the centuries. The book begins by describing Boothby Graffoe, a small village about 7 miles south of Lincoln. Ruddock traces its origins back to the Domesday Book (1086), explaining its Scandinavian place-name and its importance within the medieval district known as the Graffoe Wapentake. He discusses the village church, local farms, notable families, and changes in agriculture and village life over time. Somerton Castle, located about a mile west of the village. Ruddock describes how Antony Bek (Anthony Bek), Bishop of Durham, obtained permission to build the castle in 1281. Designed as a quadrangular castle with four circular corner towers and surrounded by moats, it was both a fortified residence and a symbol of wealth and power. Author: J. G. Ruddock Publisher: J.
