Octavo, terra-cotta cloth (hardcover), [iv], 80 pp. This copy includes a 4-page ALS from friend and fellow author, George William Curtis, dated Nov. 28, 1869, addressed to "My Dear Senator," describing a conversation he had with Holmes in 1869. Now, ending this lecture to the first year students at Harvard, he reminds them "You cannot all follow the armies of your country to the field. But remember that he who labors for the general good at home is an ununiformed soldier in the same holy cause with those who bear arms or minister at the side of the ambulance and in the camp hospital." Very clean and tight with a loose front free endpaper. Bearing the small red book label of collector Leroy Arthur Surgarman. Medicine, Literature, Civil War, Americana. KHS - X21.

All items subject to prior sale. Shipping is $4.25 for the first
volume via book rate ($9.00 via Priority Mail) and $1.00 for each volume
thereafter. Rates for international orders are a minimum of $28.00 per
book (via Global Priority Air, if feasible). Sets, oversize and/or heavier
volumes will generally cost more to ship, both domestically and
internationally; we will quote a price to you when this is the case. Florida
residents need to add 7% sales tax. Payment may be by Check/Money
