About this Item

Description:

Archive of 27 photos from the Mexican Border War and Revolution era. Consists 13 silver gelatin original photographs and 14 real photo postcard. Photos range in size from 2" x 3" to 4.5" x 6.5". Includes three photographs mounted on original photographers' boards, two with captions on verso. One shows a grouping of tents and horses from a distance beside farm buildings with the caption "This is Camp Cattlin [sic] on our way to A, Lake". Another shows a closer view of horses, tents, and troops in a field with the caption "This is Campt Lacenter the first camp out to A, Lake". The third mounted photograph shows two American soldiers sitting in a horse-drawn cart. Other photos show daily life for American troops during the Border War conflicts of the early 20th century, including pictures of troops reading and writing letters, washing their clothes, and playing trombone and tuba. One small picture shows troops looking down a dining table at the camera. Another bears a caption in ink on verso "American soldiers in civilian clothes in front of Juarez, Mexico, cathedral door, 1916. Third from left and on extreme right are Mexicans." Real photo postcards depict both American and Mexican troops, including images captioned "A Mexican Cavalryman" and "On the Mexican Border, Mexican Fighters in their Trenches". One postcard with a Christmas greeting dating to 1916 on verso shows Mexican Revolutionary leader Pancho Villa, with caption "Pancho Villa (Third from Right) and Some Lieutenants". Another shows a view of the Santa Fe Street International Bridge between El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico. This bridge was the site of the 1917 Bath Riots, a series of protests against dehumanizing border crossing policies in the U.S. which subjected Mexican incomers to public nudity and kerosene baths. Overall very good condition. A fascinating series of photographs from the Mexico-United States border during the Mexican Revolution. Seller Inventory # 20983
