Border Pinks

Dianthus can be divided into three groups: the species and their varieties, carnations and pinks. This book covers all aspects of the pinks both in the wild and in cultivation, with special emphasis on the latter. The Dianthus Register lists well over 30,000 registered names, of which many are pinks. Here Richard Bird concentrates on those in existence or that have been so recently. The latter group are included as they are often referred to in the literature and may still be found somewhere. The criterion for inclusion of species is whether a plant is likely to appeal to someone interested in growing what can be termed 'hardy plants', plants suitable for the herbaceous or mixed border.
Dianthus forms one of the backbone genera of front-of-border planting and path edgings, as well as rock gardening. This book will find wide appeal amongst both flower and alpine gardeners.
