Born in the Wayeb: Book One

A child born during the five dangerous days of the Wayeb. A powerful enemy who knows at once that a new rival has entered the world.
Deep in the ancient Maya world, drums pound and men dance to keep the gods of the Underworld at bay during the Wayeb—the ominous five days at the end of the year. In the midst of those fearful days, Na’om is born. Her arrival sends a ripple across the land, alerting Satal, the black witch of Mayapan, to the existence of a child who may one day challenge her power.
Feared because of the taint surrounding her birth, Na’om grows up an outcast in the village of Pa’nima, more at home hidden among the liana vines with her black jaguar, Ek’ Balam, than among her neighbors. Guided by her grandmother and the village shaman, she struggles to understand the disturbing dreams and visions that have followed her since childhood—and the strange abilities beginning to emerge within her.
But when Na’om’s dreams become living nightmares, she must discover what she is capable of before Satal destroys her and everyone she loves.
Set amid the cities, jungles, beliefs, and mythology of the ancient Maya, Born in the Wayeb is Book One of The Mayan Chronicles, an award-winning historical fantasy series.
