To Borneo and Back: An Encounter with Dietrich Bonhoeffer requires one to confront costly grace. As Bonhoeffer said: "When Christ calls a man, he bids him to come and die." This challenge confronted Hipkins when he read Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship in 1959 and struggled to establish Church of the Savior in a new, affluent suburb of Montgomery, in Cincinnati, Ohio. From a guard post in Germany to a South India field clinic for people afflicted by leprosy, the writer's search for personal service leads through the snake infested jungles of Borneo. He invites you to take to the road with him.

About the Author

James R. Hipkins is a native of Ohio and a Veteran of WWII. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and Boston University, then studied Mandarin Chinese at Yale University. Jim and Charlotte, his wife of 56 years, were missionaries of The West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church to Sarawak (Borneo) and to Singapore. Jim served on the staff of the Third Assembly of the World Council of Churches in New Delhi, India, in 1961. He shared in many study seminars during his time in Asia
