Bôrô-Boudour Dans L'ile De Java by Conradus Leemans. This nineteenth-century scholarly introduction and the first part of a detailed architectural description survey Borobudur on Java, framed by a prefatory discussion of Java's history and the monument's significance. The work situates Borobudur within Java's eastern kingdoms and the island's Hindu-Buddhist heritage, tracing construction in the 8th–9th centuries and decline by the 10th, and contrasts its architecture with other Java temples. It argues that the relief program is predominantly Buddhist in orientation, with Hindu iconography appearing as symbolic attributes; later Islam and colonial contact reshape Java's religious landscape, leaving only remnants in private or ritual practice. The iconography, procession scenes, and architectural spaces are analyzed as a syncretic repertoire—Buddha, Bodhisattvas, Garuda, and Brahmanic symbols woven together. Daily life, social hierarchy, patronage, and ritual performance are depicted, alongside inscriptions, epigraphy, and critical use of Babads. Methodologically, the text blends iconographic analysis with architectural study and historical tradition within a comparative frame.
