Item description from seller

Very attractive American edition of Erasmus Darwin's celebrated scientific poem in two parts, The Economy of Vegetation and The Loves of the Plants. William Blake's engravings along with Darwin's anthropomorphic language helped make this work, one of the first popular science books, very widely read. Darwin anticipates ideas later adopted by his grandson, Charles, by emphasizing the connection between plants and humanity, both being a part of the same natural world. 8vo, xviii, 278; 144pp. Index of plant names. Illustrated with a copper engraved frontis, 16 copper engraved plates (6 by William Blake), and a folding geologic chart. Contemporary tree calf, brown spine label. Joints and spine rubbed, endpapers toned and foxed, title page with an old repair. Very good.
