Pages can include considerable notes--in pen or highlighter--but notes cannot obscure the text. An acceptable condition book that has bound part 1 and 2 together. Part 1 lists no edition and is potentially 1st and Part 2 is Third Edition. The front cover of the leather binding has come loose from the book, and the boards and spine are fairly worn but still remain hardy. The textblock is very handsome overall for a book of this impressive age, with a few expected scuffs and marks to the endpapers. There are also tears to the frontispiece of part I and the title page before the pages become impressively clean and bright with very few signs of dust and tanning, including an intact frontispiece and title page for part I. The illustrations have left ghost tan imprints of themselves on the opposite page but no text is obscured, and the previous owner has left a smart ex-libris plate on the front board and a few minor pencil annotations in the margins. No parts of the binding appear to be slackening and the pages align very nicely. A very sturdy well cared-for private library copy within it's covers that deserves a rebind. If not, it still remains stellar as a reading copy. More photographs available on request. Contains 9 engraved plates in volume one, including 'Fertilization of Egypt' confirmed to be engraved by William Blake, and 10 engraved plates in volume II.
