Botanical Miscellany: Containing Figures and Descriptions of Such Plants as Recommend Themselves by Their Novelty, Rarity or History: Volume 2

Botanical Miscellany: Containing Figures And Descriptions Of Such Plants As Recommend Themselves By Their Novelty, Rarity Or History by William Jackson Hooker. This volume is a 19th?century compendium that blends field travelogue, colonial observation, and rigorous plant taxonomy. It offers a composite portrait of British exploration in the Indian Ocean region, foregrounding biographical sketches of naturalists like Captain Dugald Carmichael, their voyages to Mauritius, Bourbon, and the Cape, and critical reflections on slavery, governance, and settlement, alongside extensive natural history notes. In its botanical portion, the work surveys Malay flora with formal descriptions and plates, includes ethnobotanical notes on cultivation and uses, and provides a systematic enumeration of Lycopodiaceae with cross?regional distribution. The front matter contextualizes Indian botany, tracing institutions and major works that shaped European understanding of Indian flora. The book thus interweaves travel narrative, geology and geography, and a dense taxonomic corpus to illuminate how empire, science, and exploration advanced botanical knowledge in the early modern era.
