The Botanical Register: Consisting Of Coloured Figures Of Exotic Plants Cultivated In British Gardens With Their History And Mode Of Treatment by Sydenham Teast Edwards; John Lindley is a lavish early 19th-century horticultural reference that presents illustrated plates of exotic garden plants along with text detailing their origins, identification, and cultivation. The work, organized by genus and species, provides Latin diagnoses and English notes on origin (often from the Cape of Good Hope, the West Indies, or the East Indies), cultivation requirements (greenhouse or stove culture), and propagation methods (cuttings, layers, or division). It features extensive English and Latin indexes, including an alphabetical index to Volume I, and offers both scientific and practical insights into botany, taxonomy, and horticultural practice of its era. The plates cover a wide range of ornamental species such as Camellia, Passiflora, Hibiscus, Protea, Jasminum, Epidendrum, and many others, reflecting exchanges of plants across Europe and the Americas and the developing science of plant cultivation in British gardens.
