近三十年来汪晖常于欧美左翼思想论坛发言，被视为中国新左派代表，其专著获欧美著名大学出版社竞相出版，还获得多个重要奖项，被西方学界认可其对现代性问题的批判性思考具有世界性影响，获得西方左翼思想共同体高度认可，他陷入抄袭争议时曾有上百西方左翼学者公开声援。与汪晖在西方的发展相比，其理论著述在国内未遭根本性挑战，针对他的争议如《读书》相关事件、抄袭事件等多围绕道德评价展开，批评者多试图以道德批判摧毁其学术公信力，国内自由主义学者对其理论成果采取"不看、不议、不批"的忽视态度，作者认为这种做法是缺乏理论勇气与能力的表现，因自由主义学者未正面交锋，汪晖的理论近三十年未遭遇全面系统的学术批评，作者认为该状况应当终结，本文作者的批评汪晖新著的长文刊发于台湾《思想》杂志第43期长篇批评文章《为革命招魂？--评汪晖新著》。

文章作者提出一系列问题，质疑汪晖近三十年将"中国叙事"重构为世界普遍性话语的理论工程能否被西方左翼思想共同体接受，包括其对20世纪革命史的改写、"超级政党"方案、"中国模式"取代美国霸权的主张能否得到西方左翼学者认同，以及西方学界是否还会为其已被抛弃的相关理论颁奖。作者指出汪晖在新著中批评霍布斯鲍姆从欧洲视野勾画"短20世纪"、未将中国革命置于中心，批评巴迪欧丧失革命信心，认为汪晖的理论雄心是在西方左翼阵线实现理论突破，主张20世纪属于中国。作者引用托马斯-索维尔《知识分子与社会》中引述的奥威尔观点及索维尔的看法，即20世纪独裁者多有国内外知识分子支持者，进而质疑汪晖是这类支持者，认为汪晖重构革命史是为暴力革命和无产阶级专政辩护，质疑其政治逻辑与独裁者统治逻辑无区别。作者称其与汪晖的争论不是个人或左右之争，认为汪晖的叙事是为一党永久执政提供合法性，将中国革命及其政权塑造成世界普遍正义的终极来源，其主张既背离自由主义理念，也不符合西方左翼传统的政治民主立场，称二者之争是文明与野蛮之争，认为自由主义者需要承担批判极权主义、国家主义的使命，要对依靠暴力、镇压与欺骗的理论坚决说不。
