The operas include Norma, Lucia di Lammermoor, Faust, Semiramis, Jerusalem, L'Etoile du Nord, Robert le Siable, Le Prophete, and Mary Stuart. . . . . Le Theatre Francais de la Nouvelle-Orleans, founded as the Theatre d'Orleans in 1815, quickly became the centerpiece of French-language opera and theatre in New Orleans, reflecting the city?s deep ties to European culture. Built under the direction of Saint-Domingue refugee John Davis and rebuilt after devastating fires, the theatre drew top performers from France, premiered recent European operas, and delighted New Orleans audiences with sophisticated productions in a rapidly growing city. To avoid performing in New Orleans? harsh summer heat, the theatre?s company famously toured major northern cities, helping bring French opera to a broader American public.?
