Vertel me hoe hij is ontstaan.’ Die vraag stelt Mathijs Deen op een zonnige septemberdag aan zijn tafelgenoot, een geoloog. Het antwoord dat volgt is het begin van een reis die de lezer meevoert van een tijd ver voordat we spraken van een Europees continent naar de dagen van nu, waarin schippers de rivier de Rijn nog altijd als een levend wezen zien, een persoon.
