Bowhunter. This item is unavailable.Bowhunter

Young Tory Bowhunter and his uncle Noah search for the boy's famed buffalo-hunting father and, on their journey, become embroiled with a young woman and a rival Indian and are soon caught up in a lethal Ute insurrection

This Western is loosely based on the known facts about the 1879 Meeker Massacre in Colorado. Its fictional embellishments include a touching romance involving the narrator, Tory Bowhunter, an ill-educated, perceptive 19-year-old, and Josie Meeker, daughter of Nathan Meeker, Indian Agent at White River Agency. When Meeker tries to make the Ute Indians over in the image of whites, the Ute's attack the agency (Tory's description of the massacre is harrowing). The author may have "wrought havoc" (his words) with the facts, but it is mighty readable "havoc." This superior first novel is for anyone interested in the West and the unjust treatment of Native Americans. Sister Avila, Acad. of Holy Angels, Minneapolis
