Mais qui est Boy, en réalité ? Derrière la façade, l'ombre se découvre peu à peu, celle d'un faible soumis à ses passions, soudain possédé par la folie du jeu, des sens, de l'alcool ou de la vitesse. Il ne laisse pas moins dans la mémoire de ceux qui l'ont aimé une blessure qui ne guérit jamais tout à fait, souvenir lumineux d'un passage ébloui.
Fait d'un récit qui en est la trame, et d'un personnage merveilleux qui en est l'âme, ce livre nous offre beaucoup plus qu'une histoire fraîche et tragique tout ensemble : un tableau de moeurs aux couleurs de la nostalgie, avec la touche acide qui est le propre du talent de Christine de Rivoyre. À travers l'aventure de Boy et des siens, racontée tour à tour par " Crevette " ou par Suzon, nous découvrons aussi bien le monde des " maîtres " bourgeois que celui de l'office, avec ses fêtes à lui, ses alliances paysannes, ses joies, ses dimanches et ses bals. La romancière réussit à recréer minutieusement un univers d'avant-guerre, ses rites, ses opinions figées, un mode de vie et des illusions encore très proches du XIXe siècle. Foisonnante, et chaleureusement évoquée avec la mémoire du coeur, c'est toute une vieille société qui s'apprête à basculer vers des lendemains inconnus. L'histoire n'en finit pas de se répéter.
Depuis la Mandarine, les Sultans ou Fleur d'agonie, l'auteur du Petit Matin, autre hommage à l'adolescence, approfondit chaque fois la maîtrise de son métier d'écrivain et nous donne avec Boy un très beau roman d'amour et d'enfance qui va plus loin que la seule recherche d'instants heureux échappés à l'oubli, tout en restant chargé d'émotion et de tendre vérité.
