First published in 1750, Gurney"s Brachygraphy became one of the most influential English systems of shorthand. This edition incorporates Joseph Gurney"s improvements to his father"s method. This work has been signed by the author's grandson, W. B. Gurney, to the final page. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Thomas Gurney by J. Collyer, and 12 engraved pages demonstrating shorthand characters and specimen passages. Collated, complete. A practical manual of shorthand writing, presenting an abbreviated alphabet, rules for constructing words and sentences, and engraved examples for transcription practice. Thomas Gurney was appointed official shorthand writer at the Old Bailey in 1748, recording more than 10,000 trials during his twenty-two years in the post. His son Joseph succeeded him as a leading legal shorthand writer, and first edited his father"s Brachygraphy for the ninth edition of 1778.
