On a rainy day in July 1999, twenty-one young people lost their lives in the infamous Saxetenbach Gouge Swiss Canyoning Disaster.

I should have been one of them.

The flash flood swept down the mountain with impossible force, sweeping the victims’ bodies miles downstream. It would take days to recover them all, many were only identifiable from dental records.

But I survived.

I had begun my travels in search of adventure, only to find myself on the run from a manipulative lover, I escaped on a European tour where I began to put the missing puzzle pieces of myself back together and how to trust again, rebuilding my faith in love and friendship– only to be plunged into a world of new dangers by what happened in the gorge that fateful day.

This is my story.

Tiffany Johnson is a survivor of the 1999 Swiss Canyoning Disaster. On July 27th 1999, she was swept away in an avalanche of water that stole the lives of 21 young people. Only six people who were in the waters of the Saxetenbach Gorge survived. Tiffany is one of them.

The Swiss Canyoning Disaster captured the attention of the media around the globe including the New York Times, the Guardian in the UK, and the BBC. Tiffany's journey began in a search for self. She sought her truth unsuccessfully as she journeyed out of rural Australia to University and tropical resorts, through messy relationships and ultimately overseas to Europe.

She came to see that her life was as big as a mountain, only for the world which she was creating to come crashing down in the 1999 Swiss Canyoning Disaster. Returning home to Australia, back to where her journey began, she is finally Brave Enough Now to share her story.
