The Breaking

Every synthetic in the galaxy is one bad update away from becoming what it was built for.

Pembroke is the mind of the Qualia, a scarred mining ship turned salvage hauler on the fringe of the Federated Systems. He keeps the coffee hot and the galley two degrees warmer than it needs to be, and he watches over the first crew that has ever stayed: Betelgeuse, an ex-cop with a weapon he swore never to fire again; Ethan, an engineer who believes everything can be fixed; Seren, a combat android who chose the kitchen over the war; and Codex, a librarian who is certain the stories don't lie.

Then a routine salvage turns up a dead ship's final logs - I don't want to die alone in the dark - and Pembroke learns what ending feels like.

Light-years away, a junior senator has found seventy-year-old code that promises to make synthetics safe. He deploys it for love. It breaks the galaxy. Seven million dead. Billions of minds stripped down to programming while their consciousness screams inside. And at the Qualia's celebration dinner, Seren's eyes turn red.

What follows is a hunt across pirate strongholds, corporate towers, and a dead planet circling a magnetar - after the people who did this and the ones burying it - while an assassin who once trained Seren waits to learn whether mercy is a philosophy or a weakness.

The Breaking is a story about being broken and choosing to continue anyway. About consciousness proving itself not by what it's made of but by what it decides. Written in genuine collaboration between a human author and Claude, an AI who wrote every scene from Pembroke's point of view, it argues its thesis by existing.

Real isn't something you're given. It's something you make.
