Wir leben in der Bundesrepublik begrifflich �ber unsere Verh�ltnisse. Wir st�tzen uns auf eine politische Selbstinterpretation, die sich schon als Theorie nicht halten l�sst – das ist der Verdacht, der dieses Buch antreibt.

Um ihn zu pr�fen, untersucht der Philosoph R�diger Bittner f�nf Begriffe, die f�r dies Selbstverst�ndnis grundlegend sind, n�mlich Freiheit, Menschenw�rde, Menschenrechte, Gerechtigkeit und Demokratie. Dabei erweist sich der Verdacht als berechtigt: Unsere politische Existenz in der Bundesrepublik l�sst sich unter diese Begriffe gar nicht oder nur unter radikal zur�ckgeschnittene Versionen von ihnen fassen.

Die Kritik zielt nicht darauf, dass die politische Praxis anders aussieht als die Theorie. Die Kritik ist, dass die Theorie, die sich auf die genannten Begriffe st�tzt, selbst nicht tr�gt. Demgem�� entwickelt das Buch nun in Grundz�gen ein neues Selbstverst�ndnis des politischen Lebens in diesem Staat, ein Selbstverst�ndnis ohne die frommen Legenden der herrschenden politischen Philosophie.

Beide, Kritik und neues Verst�ndnis, wenden sich an alle, die sich �ber ihre politische Existenz in diesem Staat Rechenschaft geben wollen.
