Brief Encounters: a memoir from Europe (Italy Chapter)

In Brief Encounters: Italy Chapter, Himel traces his journey from the restless streets of Calcutta to the timeless landscapes of Italy, an odyssey not of distance, but of perception. Written in an elegant blend of travelogue, reflection, and cultural observation, the book explores how two civilizations: Bengal and Italy-mirror and illuminate each other through their art, warmth, and contradictions.

From Rome's marble ruins to the narrow alleys of Trastevere, from conversations with Italian friends in university canteens to encounters with Bangladeshi migrants near Termini, Himel observes the world with a poet's sensitivity and a sociologist's curiosity. Each chapter captures the texture of lived experience, the scent of espresso mingling with the memory of cha, the calm order of Europe seen through the eyes of one raised amidst India's beautiful chaos.

Through these vignettes, Brief Encounters becomes more than a travel diary, it is a meditation on belonging, identity, and the shared humanity that underlies difference. In the spirit of Tagore's cosmopolitan humanism, Himel's writing bridges the East and the West with empathy and insight, reminding us that every journey outward is also a journey inward.

A book for travelers, thinkers, and dreamers alike, Brief Encounters: Italy Chapter invites readers to see the world not as a collection of places, but as a continuous conversation between cultures and the self.
