About the Author
In 2012, his first book Forgotten Lancashire & Parts of Cheshire and the Wirral cemented his reputation as the ‘king of fact-free history’. It was followed in 2013 by The Lost Films of 20th Century Spatchcock — still the most comprehensive work on the prodigious output of the Spatchcock studios. He was appointed official historian to the Tripe Marketing Board in the same year.
Derek writes a regular column in Lancashire Life, the monthly lifestyle magazine for people who aspire to be more Lancastrian. He is currently working on his next project, an authorised biography of Sir Norman Wrassle.
Professor Richard Hawkins was for many years the Sir Norman Wrassle Professor of Food Science And Ethics in the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Home Economics at the University of Wigan. His books include a study of molluscs, The Shellfish Gene and a history of British crisps, An Appetite For Golden Wonder. A keen gardener and atheist, he was well known for a series of vicious attacks on God for which he was later acquitted.
He was co-founder of the UK Science Party which campaigns for science, mathematics and engineering to have more funding, media coverage and political priority. Its policies include making science the only subject taught in schools, the withdrawal of all funding for the arts, and the reintroduction of the death penalty for homeopaths who refuse to recant.
