Printed Cover: President Clap s Defence of the Doctrines of the New-England Churches. Printed paper cover. 44 numbered pages + contents page at the rear. Appears to be sewn in original paper wraps. Measures 4.75 x 7 inches. Good condition. The author, Thomas Clap, was the President of Yale College from 1740-1766. He argued for many years that the college should be allowed to require declarations of religious faith from its employees. He was concerned about the liberal theology that he felt was creeping into the pulpit. This copy has an inscription on the top of the title page. "A gift of the Rev. Author to Edw[ar]d Wigglesworth." Wigglesworth was a Harvard graduate (1710) and in 1722 was appointed Divinity Professor there. He was the first Divinity Professor in the American Colonies. He died in 1763.
