Brief Interlude: the letters of George Gissing to Edith Sichel. [Edited] by Pierre Coustillas - printer's corrected proofs

Printer's corrected page proofs: 36 leaves, loose, printed rectos only, lacking only pp. [1] (half-title), [4] (copyright page), [43] (limitation page) and the illustrations facing pp. 18 and 26; with the editor's manuscript queries and printer's corrections on 21 pages. Some pages mildly creased, title-page slightly marked. The published edition was limited to 170 numbered copies. Edith Sichel (1862-1914) was a writer and "amateur philanthropist" whose critique of George Gissing (1857-1903) in Murray's Magazine in 1888 attracted Gissing's attention (though he didn't take to the title, "Two Philanthropic Novelists: Mr Walter Besant and Mr George Gissing"). The two corresponded frankly between 1889 and 1890; on their meeting he was disturbed by his feelings towards her. "Few literary scholars have laboured quite so devotedly in the service of a single subject as Pierre Coustillas [1930-2018]," D.J. Taylor opened an obituary for The Guardian. That subject was George Gissing.
