A Brief And Serious Warning To Such As Are Concerned In Commerce And Trading, who Go Under The Profession Of Truth, To Keep Within The Bounds Thereof, In Righteousness, Justice And Honesty Towards All Men: And Now Re-Printed, Together With The Advices Of Several Yearly-Meetings Of Like Tendency, Ambrose Rigge. This English-language tract, originally written in 1678 by Ambrose Rigge and re-printed in 1771 by order of the last Yearly-Meeting in London, challenges Friends who trade to maintain plainness and integrity rather than pursue wealth through speculation or debt. Rigge condemns extravagance, the borrowing of others’ money, and the misalignment between professed faith and worldly practices that bring distress to families and communities. Drawing on Yearly-Meeting extracts and advices, it urges believers to live within their means, to pay debts promptly, and to beware risky ventures that jeopardize the witness of Truth. The work emphasizes that honest dealing, simplicity, and humility are central to Christian life, and that the power and glory of God should be reflected in business, rather than in pride or deceit. The volume thus serves as a historical record of Quaker ethics in commerce and a practical guide for sustaining reputation and peace within the community.
