Historical novel loosely based on the rivalry of North Carolina tobacco tycoons Washington Duke and John Harvey McElwee. Basis for the 1950 film directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Gary Cooper, Lauren Bacall and Patricia Neal. The only novel published by Fitz-Simons (1912-1991).
