Bringing Home the Cost of War

In this powerful and deeply human memoir, James Foster recounts a soldier’s journey from the brutal battlefields of Vietnam to the quiet, grief-filled living rooms of American families waiting for news no one wants to deliver.

Serving twenty-four months in combat as a young officer with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, Foster survived some of the heaviest fighting of the Vietnam War. He lost men he led, carried the emotional weight of command, and returned home forever changed. Yet what awaited him after Vietnam proved even more defining.

Assigned to an ROTC program after combat, Foster suddenly found himself responsible not only for training future officers, but also for performing Next of Kin notifications and serving as a Survivor Assistance Officer—tasks that would bring him face-to-face with the true cost of war. In kitchens, living rooms, and small-town funeral homes, he witnessed the heartbreak of parents, widows, and communities shattered by loss.

Through vivid storytelling, he reflects on:

• Intense combat operations in Vietnam’s most dangerous regions
• Leading young paratroopers through loss, fear, and brotherhood
• The crushing burden of delivering news of death to families
• The long shadow of PTSD and the struggle to reclaim a sense of normalcy
• Building a veterans’ community on a campus divided by war
• The decades of service that shaped him as a leader, husband, and father

Bringing Home the Cost of War is not just a soldier’s memoir. It is a tribute to the fallen, a portrait of the families who carry their memory, and a testament to the resilience required to serve—not only on the battlefield but long after the fighting stops.

Honest, unfiltered, and profoundly moving, this book offers readers a rare and intimate look at the emotional realities of war and the lifelong journey of those who serve.
