J. M. Dent & Sons, Ltd., 1919. Hardcover, 188 pp. First Edition. In good condition/ NO dust jacket. Red cloth covered boards with blind-stamped logo on front cover and red lettering on spine. Light nicking and fraying to cloth at corner tips and along spine and light overall scuffing, aging and soiling to covers as well. Binding tight. Endpapers moderately browned with age. Text block is lightly aged but otherwise clean and unmarked. Not Ex-library. No remainder marks. An examination of the status of the British coal industry in the aftermath of WWI. Stone was secretary to the Coal Controller and assistant secretary to the Coal Commission. In his foreword, he states that the book "is not concerned with this or that theory of coal mine management, and does not enter upon a discussion of technical details, but is intended to place before the reader well-ascertained facts. as to the financial and industrial future of this country." It provides a clear, concise analysis of the early history of the industry, the features of its present-day operations, the legislation concerning it, the questions of output and of distribution and consumption, and the perplexities of wages and wages disputes.
