About this title

Synopsis

The British Essayists; With Prefaces, Historical And Biographical: The Rambler by Alexander Chalmers presents the Rambler, a pioneering English periodical by Samuel Johnson, enhanced by Alexander Chalmers' historical and biographical prefatory material. This volume compiles Johnson's Rambler essays, starting with No. 1 from 1749-50, and includes a detailed Biographical Preface that explores Johnson's life, the design of the Rambler, and the editing history of the text, including Johnson's revisions to earlier editions. It features a contents listing of the topics discussed in the essays—morality, criticism, patronage, and the duties of common life—along with the evolution of Johnson's prose style. The Preface highlights the first edition's modest sale yet enduring influence, the sequence of the editors, and the compilation and printing of the work in volumes, emphasizing the significant role of the Rambler in the 18th century and its impact on British essay literature and moral philosophy.
