4to. Blue cloth with copper spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 352pp. Extensive illustrations. Fine/fine. Pristine second edition -- the preferred "greatly revised and expanded" edition -- of these (to continue subtitle) "critical biographical essays, more than 525 illustrations, and complete catalogues of the artists' engravings and etchings." This copy bears a choice addition: Tipped in facing title page is a unique frontispiece, a fine engraved portrait of John Ruskin, Plate 30 from "The Century Gallery of One Hundred Portraits" published by Century Magazine in 1897 -- a striking engraving by T. Johnson first published in that periodical in 1887. In addition, tipped into this copy facing the half-title page is an unidentified early 20th century 5½" X 9¼ sepia tone portrait of Ruskin (likely a book plate). Press release laid in.
