Broke in Boston: A Guide to Living Cheap in the City

The ultimate insider's guide to living well but frugally in one of the most expensive cities. To find the cheapest spots in town, five young and broke journalists from Boston came together to share their tips and survival strategies. Broke in Boston provides readers with a funny, well-written, and thorough guidebook complete with everything one needs to orient to the city, 12 color maps, and chapters on finding the cheapest entertainment, food, drinks, clothing, furniture, apartments, transportation, and date spots in town.

City living on the cheap is a way of life for Andrew Einhorn, 28. A Connecticut native, he has lived in Atlanta, where he studied at Emory University; in London, where he studied at University College London; in Boston, where he held his first "salaried position;" and in Washington DC, where he completed his graduate degree and currently resides. Upon his arrival in Boston (still his favorite city), Andrew began working as an environmental health consultant at JSI Research & Training, a nonprofit headquartered in South Boston. Unfortunately, Andrew's intense desire to experience all of Boston's nightlife and culture clashed with his nonprofit salary (and his expensive tastes). From this deep, personal strife, Broke in Boston was born.

In the Spring of 2005, Andrew completed his Master's degree with new expertise in environmental policy and management, and being young and broke. To remedy his struggle, he took on a consulting position with ICF International and commenced work on Broke in Boston.

Lindsay Holst, 21, is a Boston-based freelance writer, born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. A graduate of Boston University's journalism program, this self-proclaimed fast-food connoisseur came to the city in 2002 eager to absorb some culture (and good seafood) on a budget. When she's not scouring the city for hole-in-the wall burger joints and other hidden gems, Lindsay can be found reading or running along the Charles River. Lindsay's professional accolades include writing for The Improper Bostonian, The Daily Free Press, and The Muse, Boston University's independent arts & entertainment publication.

Joelle Hobeika, a 2005 graduate of Harvard University, has lived the first 21 years of her life in Cambridge. While at Harvard, Joelle studied English and spent her free time teaching photography, planning social events for the campus community and writing short stories. Joelle is an avid runner and takes great pride in having completed the Boston Marathon. Her professional accomplishments include writing for the Harvard Crimson, LIFE magazine, and New York Moves magazine. Joelle currently works in book publishing in New York City, where she edits young-adult novels.

Rebecca Dreilinger is a 2005 graduate of Brandeis University's Journalism Program. A news junkie, grammar maven, and lover of all things Bostonian, Rebecca enthusiastically contributed to the construction of Broke in Boston, following a string of successful journalistic experiences. Her professional career includes writing and editing for some of the nation's most well known and profitable magazines, Vogue and Washingtonian, as well as more specialized publications such as Moment and the Association for Psychological Science's Observer.

Kevin Collins, a recent graduate (2005) of Boston College, is currently pursuing his Masters in Education. Kevin spent the past four years studying English and Philosophy and hopes to contribute to enhancing the education and support systems of underprivileged youths. Collins has a background in service and leadership training, having focused much of his time during his undergraduate career on retreat opportunities and team-building workshops. Presently, he teaches in a severe special needs classroom with students ranging in age from sixteen to nineteen years old.
