"London For Private Circulation Only. 1869." 5 ¼ in. x 7 ¾ in., 13 pp. An unopened copy, with the word "grolier" watermarked in the paper. Blue-gray printed wrappers, sewn. Light toning to cover edges, else, a fine copy. An early owner has kept it in specially made, thick, red-paper folder with a typed label on the front cover. The fleur-de-lis design is present on the front cover. Loosely inserted is an early typed note which, referring to this copy, states: "This appears to be the counterfeit of the [Wise] forged original, according to Centenary Studies (1959, Univ. Texas Press), to wit: 'a counterfeit, printed in the United States with fleur-de-lis at corners and no rule at end of text.'" There is a possibility that this counterfeit may be associated with Max Harzof, a book dealer in New York in the 1920s-1930s, who is mentioned in an article by W. E. Coburn in the Princeton Library Chronicle (Winter 1962; Vol. XXIII, No. 2, pp. 54) regarding the Vizetelly extracts. Carter & Pollard, pp. 192-193.
