Brownson's Review

Brownson's Reviewpresents a 19th-century Catholic reflective periodical issue that blends historical praise of Catholic missions in the Americas with a polemical program for religion-driven culture and education in the United States, alongside a critical review of contemporary American literature from a Catholic perspective. The text surveys early Spanish conquest, conversion efforts, and the role of missionaries, while examining 1847 American debates about literature and education. It foregrounds figures such as Father Bartholomew de Olmedo, critics and historians cited to defend Catholic humanitarianism, and a defense of the visible Church and Catholic identity against Protestant and secular currents. The issue includes extended discussions on predestination, Catholic doctrine versus Protestantism, and the politics of national life, as well as literary critiques of Emerson and Catholic biographies like St Stanislaus Kostka. Across essays, the work advocates a robust Catholic literary culture, loyal to papal authority, and wary of liberal modernity, while urging education and culture shaped by Christian truth.
