About this Item

First Edition. 13 pp. + cover (with art by A. F. Williams.) An example of fandom at its finest. This issue reprints (in slight abridgment) Edmund Wilson's 'New Yorker' article (5/27/44) "A Treatise on Tales of Horror" as well as P. J. Searles' reply letter to the editor (5/31/44). Rosenblum then prints four well-wrtten and -reasoned essays from fans about the Wilson/Searles debate, and about Horror. Not surprisingly, H.P. Lovecraft, August Derleth, L. Ron Hubbard, Clark Ashton Smith, and others of the Weird movement are called forth. Wilson comes across (perhaps rightly so) as an arrogant "ivory tower" critic who just doesn't "get" horror. Rosenblum was more serious than many fanzine publishers, and this is one of the highlights of his work. Mimeographed, very good condition, with minor toning to edge of front cover. An important piece for the collector of weird, science fiction, or especially horror; probably 100-200 printed. Bookseller Inventory # mon0000068706
