About this Item
A scarce edition of this Baronet's amusing account of his time recuperating among the bubbling waters of Nassau. Illustrated throughout. The scarce third edition of this work from Sir Francis Bond Head, an author and the Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada during the rebellion of 1837.In the author's preface, Head humorously explains that he 'was suddenly sentenced, in the cold evening of his life, to drink the mineral waters of one of the bubbling springs, or Brunnens, of Nassau', and that 'during this severe regimen, he was driven to amuse himself in his old age by blowing, as he toddled about, a few literary bubbles'. Head goes on to relay, in amusing detail, his time in Nassau. With the engraved title page of the 1834 first edition of this work, frontispiece, and nine further plates, all the work of C. E. A. Burges. Collated, complete. To the front free endpaper is the bookplate of H. G. Doggett. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. With two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Rebacked, with the original boards and spine restored. Original back strip fraying to perimeters. Discolouration to cloth, with bumping to board perimeters. Bookplate to front pastedown. Front joint starting, with boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean, with engraved plates age toned and foxed. Good. Seller Inventory # 793F30
