Buddha's Cake

Buddhism is easier than you think.

We spend our lives chasing things we think will make us happy, getting them, and somehow ending up back at square one. We chase pleasure, avoid pain, cling to what changes, and wonder why nothing ever feels like enough. The Buddha had a name for this. He also had a way out.

In Buddha's Cake, former Buddhist monk Seth Monk takes one of history's most profound spiritual traditions and strips it down to what actually matters: why we suffer, how we got here, and what we can do about it. Drawing on nearly a decade of monastic practice and study in Buddhist monasteries around the world, Seth walks readers through the essential teachings of Buddhism in a way that is clear, direct, and immediately applicable to daily life.

Written during a three-month silent retreat in Germany while desperately craving dessert, Buddha's Cake is unlike any other book on Buddhism you have encountered. Using humor, storytelling, and surprising everyday metaphors, Seth covers the full arc of Buddhist teaching: the nature of craving and suffering, karma and rebirth, the mechanics of meditation, and the path toward genuine liberation. Each chapter builds naturally on the last, creating a comprehensive and readable guide that never loses sight of the practical question: what does this mean for my life, right now?

This book is for you if:

• You are new to Buddhism and want a clear, honest, and engaging introduction
• You have tried meditation and want to understand the deeper framework behind it
• You are curious about why the mind does what it does and how to work with it skillfully
• You want a guide that takes the teachings seriously without taking itself too seriously

Buddha's Cake does not ask you to adopt new beliefs or change your lifestyle overnight. It simply invites you to look more clearly at your own experience and offers the tools of an ancient tradition to help you do it.

The happiness you are looking for may be closer than you think.
