Reviews:
Grade 8 Up Ancient constructions that stand out as exceptional examples of engineering technology and enduring beauty are described in this panoramic study. One chapter each is devoted to ancient Greece and Rome, MesoAmerica, South America, India and Southeast Asia, and China. Each chapter is written by an archaeologist or historian. Written as a mixture of first-person impressions and historical background, much of it is technical. The focus is on the many structures of a civilization, varying from temples to drainage systems, rather than lengthy descriptions of only a few edifices. Difficult vocabulary and convoluted sentences limit the accessibility of the text, but the many glorious full-color photographs are a browsing treat for everyone. Marguerite F. Raybould, Glendale Public Library, Calif.
