Building a Relationship from the Outside In

The conventional wisdom surrounding relationship improvement often centers on introspection. We're told to delve deep within ourselves, to understand our own emotional baggage, heal past traumas, and only then, can we build fulfilling connections. Self-help books overflow with exercises designed to boost self-esteem, improve emotional intelligence, and cultivate inner peace. Individual therapy, often framed as the cornerstone of personal growth, encourages this inward focus, promising that by fixing ourselves, we fix our relationships. And while this approach undoubtedly has merit, it's incomplete. It’s like trying to build a house by focusing solely on the blueprints, neglecting the actual bricks, mortar, and the hands that do the building. This chapter argues for a revolutionary shift: building relationships from the outside in.
