Item description from seller

Scottish Text Society, Edinburgh, 1997, first edition; 8vo, pp clv, 234; dark green cloth, spine gilt; in extremely good condition throughout. . . . The long Introduction (pp i to clv) provides a technical analysis, academic study and general account of the manuscript; this is followed by a printing of the text, an illustration of a page, textual and explanatory notes, an extensive glossary, a list of proper and place names and an appendix. . . . The Asloan manuscript, early 16th century, is an anthology of Scots prose and poetry with works by Henryson, Dunbar, Richd Holland and other anonymous authors. The "Buke of the Chess" is part of this, being a Scots translation of the Latin "Book of Chess", a series of essays on moral themes, by Jacobus de Cessolis. Cessolis's book, dating from the latter part of the 17th century, was the most famous morality book of the middle ages on chess and was widely translated into other languages and formed the basis for Caxton's 1474 printing of "The Game and Playe of the Chesse". Its subject matter is the customs of men and the duties of nobles.
