Bates' character in the film (a down-on-his-luck, no-account player of ponies married to a whore, a typical denizen of a Bukowski story). and various adventures ensue. Inspired by the life and art of Charles Bukowski, this film is (much like his own work), a study of the lives of those for whom Hollywood is a sign rather than a career.
