Mit Butler und Bootsmann

2001 Germany, hardcover, 255 pages, illustrated.ÂOver 100 years ago, Henry M. Doughty set off with a butler and boatswain on one of the most unusual trips in German inland shipping. His travel report reads like a journey back in time to the end of the 19th century, even if many of the things that the English country gentleman describes lovingly but with an unclouded perspective still seem very current to us. Doughty's two-year tour took him from Friesland via the West German canals, Hamburg and the Elbe, the Mecklenburg and Brandenburg waters to Bohemia in a converted cargo glider.
