This splendid volume from the Indiana Academy of Science, is the fruit of many years of loving labor. Part I discusses the biology of butterflies, techniques of collection and preservation, classification and identification, and conservation of habitat and endangered species. Parts II and III are species accounts of all skippers and butterflies in Indiana. Each account describes the adult and its range, provides a map showing distribution by county of its Indiana records, describes the life cycle and various larval forms, and identifies the plants on which the larvae feed. Part IV is a checklist for the state. Also provided are a hypothetical list, a glossary, a bibliography, an index of larval food-plants, and a general index. The magnificent color plates show all 149 species found in the state, 535 specimens in all, both male and female for some species, and give upper and lower views as well as variants and different-season color forms.
