Item description from seller

Buttes And Terraces At Hilea – A Field Of AA. 1883. *** An engraved lithograph with later hand coloring, printed in 1883 as part of the United States Geological Survey's Annual Report. A team of geologists from the USGS visited the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1883 and conducted extensive scientific and cultural observations of the islands, focusing on volcanoes. Hilea is situated on the southeastern coast of the island of Hawaii, “convenient” to nearby lava flows. AA is the type of lava that is in jagged pieces and blocks, as opposed to the smooth pahoehoe variety. *** Clean, clear image with good colors, blank verso, mild rippling along bottom margin, one faint horizontal crease across top margin. *** The sheet is 7.5 inches high by 11.5 inches. The image, including caption, is 4.25 inches high by 11 inches.
