William Prynne was a lawyer, but is best known as a pamphleteer whose strenuously argued publications led him to repeated encounters with the English court system. A staunch Puritan, Prynne famously attacked theatres and theatre-going (as well as other forms of entertaiment), for which he was convicted of sedition for the first time in 1634. He was released from prison in 1640. In 1644, Prynne acted as the soliciter prosecuting William Laud, who had served as Archbishop of Canterbury since 1633. Prynne's fortunes continued to oscillate in the political turmoil of the English Civil Wars, Commonwealth, and Restoration, but he continued writing and publishing through the 1650s. 1345572.
