Notarized manumission manuscript in the French language. One leaf, 5-1/2" x 8," in ink script, affixed to a sheet with later typed translation. Handwriting lightly faded but still legible, Very Good. Signed by the Notary with his Seal. In the original French, Maria is referred to as a "mulatresse." Pierre Soule, U.S. Senator from Louisiana, was a passionate Southern Rights man who would support the Mexican-American War, oppose the Compromise of 1850, endorse the spread of Slavery, and deeply resented Northern efforts to confine slavery to its southern domain.
