The mystery and magic of reverine marshes and swamps, their solitude and wildness, as well as their ecological significance, are depicted in a new book, Changing Tides: Tivoli Bays, A Hudson River Wetland by award-winning Rhinebeck photographer and writer Esther Kiviat. The book is a month-by-month natural history of the Tivoli Bays, protected fresh-water tidal coves on the east shore of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve. Illustrated with more 150 of the author's black-and-white and full-color photographs, and drawings by Kathleen A. Schmidt, Changing Tides provides fascinating glimpses of the prolific wildlife and vegetation of the Bays and adjacent uplands in both words and pictures. Changing Tides is based on Esther Kiviat's observations and experiences in the bays over the past ten years, supplemented by research and walks and talks with biologists and others.

About the Author

Born in Michigan, she has lived most of her eighty-plus years in the Mid-Hudson Valley. She taught herself photography as an aid to successive careers, including newspaper columnist, publicist, teacher of all ages from nursery school through college, owner-director of a nature camp, and environmental educator. In the last two decades she has devoted herself full-time to writing and photography, based on her lifelong interest in the natural environment. Her award-winning photographs have been widely exhibited, and along with her writings appeared in local, regional, and national publications
