A translation of Greco's Tratto del nobilissimo giuoco degli scacchi. 12mo, approximately 4¾ x 3 inches, engraved frontispiece and a double page engraved plate of a chess board, pages: xiii, [1], 1-212, errata leaf following page xxiii, bound in full calf, gilt lettered title label and gilt rules and date to spine, gilt rule to edges of covers. Binding slightly rubbed, margin of pages 3 and 6 have old ink note, not affecting text, occasional pale spotting, small tear to lower margin of chessboard (see attached image), a very good copy. No Binding. Condition: Fair. Published in London in 1750 this is the Second Edition of this book on the game of Chess and the games of Gioachino Greco, the book is a small format measuring 4.75 inches in height, xxv preface pages including the errata leaf, 212 pages, the book is bound in an old full leather binding but is lacking the front board (see pictures) internally lacks front blank endpaper and opens on to the frontispiece, the frontispiece is worn at edges with old ownership name to title page, the first page of text has some surface wear and slight loss to lower edge (see pictures) some corner wear to opening few pages the folding plate of the chess board is mostly lacking but a previous owner has recreated the missing portion by hand (see pictures) there are a number of very old handwritten annotations in old ink to a number of pages (see pictures to see examples of this ) and one page pictured, has some old colouring that has been partially erased leaving a couple of small holes in the page (pictured) last page heavily browned at edges book would benefit from rebinding else an acceptable example of this early book on chess and the games of Gioachino Greco.
