It covers in much detail gardens, plants, flowers, ceramics, jade, fish, bugs, beasts, whales, hunting game, travel commentar- ies, theater, exploration, cultural matters, folklore, all forms of art & archaeology, lacquer, jade, bronzes, biology, medicine, zoology, herpetology, philosophy, history, drama, theatre, literature, numismatics, obituaries, news, intelli- gence, Burma, French-Indo China, the Emperor, as well a host of fascinating subjects, far too many to list individu- ally here. . * About half of the work always contains superb articles on natural history or science. It was widely contributed to and by British and other foreign intellectuals in the community. A profusion of articles by the makers and shakers of the times: Ayscough, Hall, Sowerby, Bretschneider, Brewitt- Taylor, including a substantial number of Chinese authors as well. . * It is a true reflection of the excitement of its authors, and the active and energetic times of the foreign residents in China. Many of the articles are the first appearance of these essays, later a good numbere were expanded into books. . * The copious indices make this a valuable reference tool researchers and collectors alike.
