CIA Targets Fidel: Secret 1967 CIA Inspector General's Report on Plots to Assassinate Fidel Castro

Only recently declassified, this extraordinarily frank secret report was prepared in 1967 for the CIA’s director general Richard Helms on plots to assassinate Cuba’s Fidel Castro when the US media were probing the Agency’s alliance with the Mafia in these totally illegal, murderous schemes.

“It became clear very early in our investigation that the vigor with which schemes were pursued within the Agency to eliminate Castro personally varied with the intensity of the US government’s efforts to overthrow the Castro regime,” writes the CIA Inspector General.

This single-copy report marked “Secret—eyes only” is introduced here with an interview with the former head of Cuban State Security, General Fabián Escalante.

Escalante is a former head of Cuban counterintelligence and a respected authority by US researchers on CIA activities against Cuba. Following Watergate and the 1975 US Senate Commission, the US government established a congressional committee to reexamine the Kennedy assassination. President Castro assigned Fabian Escalante to direct this Cuban investigation in 1978.
