CMMI Implementation:Embarking on High Maturity Practices

This book is about the existing and continuing challenges associated with software quality. It covers the deployment of CMMI and focuses on high maturity practices by addressing issues related to organizational environment, people, processes, technology and the appraisal scenario. Based on the authors’ experiences with software process improvement initiatives using CMM, CMMI and PCMM, the book enables organizations that adopt process improvements using CMMI to be aware of the critical issues that need attention, much ahead of time.

The book answers questions on what it means to be operating in a high maturity environment. It revolves around the theme that CMM and CMMI are excellent means to high maturity. Given that CMMI Level 5 is not an end of the improvement journey, the book demonstrates how to view CMMI Level 5 as an important step to provide timely, cost-effective and defect-free software to customers and how this framework allows users to set ambitious quality targets for the future.

The book includes diverse examples to demonstrate the nature of high maturity practices. Also sample templates, process descriptions, analytical techniques with examples, and reporting formats are provided.

Professor Kanungo teaches decision support systems and operations management at the Department of Management Science, George Washington University, Washington DC. Prior to this, he was with Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi where he held the Dalmia Chair for Management of Information Technology. He pioneered the IT management specialization and helped establish two world-class laboratories (Baan Laboratory for Excellence in Enterprise Applications and the Acer Competency Laboratory).

Dr Asha Goyal started her career at Tata Consultancy Services and is currently Vice President – Quality at IBM Global Services India. She is a gold medallist in electronic engineer from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Dr Goyal is a winner of the prestigious ‘Technologist of the Year 2004 Award’ conferred by National Women of Color, USA. She has over 30 years of software development and services delivery experience from the leading IT companies in India.
